The recent floods in Thailand have hit hard drive manufacturers and driven up prices of hard drives – both internal and external.
Large suppliers who already had stock of the drives before the floods hit, are able to hold their prices until their stock runs out.
The shortage is expected to last well into 2012 and possibly beyond.
However, please note that this only affects the cost of the hard drive itself – other components used in the assembly of a computer are NOT affected.
Expect the cost of a complete computer system with a hard drive of 500Gb to increase by approximately £30 to £40.
Some sellers may take this as an opportunity to excessively inflate the price of a base unit or full computer system, so beware!
